The United States says it struck dozens of Iranian Revolutionary Guard targets during a two-hour operation, marking a sharp renewal of direct military action after missile attacks on American forces in Jordan.
U.S. Central Command said the operation hit command centres, drone facilities and other sites it described as threats to American personnel and maritime security. Iranian authorities reported casualties following strikes on Qeshm Island, while Jordan said it intercepted missiles launched toward the region.
A widening confrontation
The renewed operation follows a brief pause in U.S. strikes that had raised hopes for diplomacy over the Strait of Hormuz. Those hopes weakened after Iran rejected an Omani-backed proposal for regional management of the waterway.
U.S. and Saudi forces have also struck Iran-linked groups in Iraq following attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure. Iraq condemned violations of its sovereignty, while protests followed reported militia deaths.
Shipping and energy at risk
Commercial shipping remains exposed across the Gulf. The Strait of Hormuz normally carries about one-fifth of globally traded oil and gas, making any sustained disruption a direct threat to energy prices and supply chains.
The situation remains fast-moving, and casualty claims from the opposing sides have not been independently reconciled.
