Japan Earthquake Toll Rises as Heat and Aftershocks Slow Rescue Work

The death toll from the Kumamoto earthquake has risen sharply as emergency teams search collapsed buildings while severe heat, damaged utilities and continuing aftershocks complicate rescue work.

Japanese authorities and news agencies reported at least 25 confirmed deaths, with later accounts putting the toll as high as 30 as searches continued. Dozens of people have been injured and thousands remain in shelters.

Critical rescue window

Teams are working at heavily damaged sites including a shopping centre, a paper mill and collapsed homes. A strong aftershock added fresh risk for crews operating around unstable structures.

Thousands of Self-Defense Force personnel have been deployed. Large areas remain without electricity or running water, and officials are sending water, cooling equipment and supplies to evacuation centres as temperatures reach about 35°C.

Industry remains disrupted

Manufacturers including automotive and semiconductor companies have suspended or assessed operations across Kyushu, an important industrial hub. Transport links and local supply chains are also affected.

Authorities are urging residents to avoid damaged buildings and prepare for additional aftershocks. Casualty totals may continue to change as searches progress.
