Sean Combs Appeals Conviction and Four-Year Prison Sentence

Sean “Diddy” Combs is appealing his prostitution-related conviction and 50-month sentence after being acquitted of racketeering and sex-trafficking charges.

Sean Combs Appeals Conviction and Four-Year Prison Sentence

Sean “Diddy” Combs is challenging the federal conviction that resulted in a prison sentence of four years and two months.

The mixed verdict

A jury convicted Combs on two counts of transporting people across state lines for prostitution-related encounters. It acquitted him of the more serious racketeering and sex-trafficking charges, which could have carried a life sentence.

The sentence

A federal judge imposed 50 months in prison, a $500,000 fine and supervised release. Prosecutors had sought a substantially longer term, while the defence requested a much shorter sentence.

The appeal

Combs’ lawyers told an appeals court that the sentencing judge improperly relied on evidence of alleged threats and violence connected to conduct for which the jury did not convict him. Prosecutors maintain that the sentence was lawful.

The appeal does not erase the acquittals or the convictions. It asks a higher court to review whether legal errors affected the remaining judgment and punishment. Combs also faces separate civil claims, which are not resolved by the criminal appeal.
