The Metropolitan Museum of Art will stage a major John Galliano exhibition while directly addressing the conduct that ended his Dior career.

Met’s John Galliano Exhibition Reopens Debate Over Designer’s Past

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s decision to devote its next major fashion exhibition to John Galliano is renewing debate about how cultural institutions present celebrated artists with deeply controversial histories.

A career and a public fall

Galliano is widely regarded as one of fashion’s most influential designers, with landmark periods at Givenchy, Dior and Maison Margiela. He was dismissed by Dior in 2011 after antisemitic and racist remarks became public, and he was later convicted in France over the incidents.

The Costume Institute exhibition, titled John Galliano: Horizons, is scheduled to open in May 2027. Organisers say it will not avoid the scandal. One section is expected to address the remarks, their consequences and Galliano’s subsequent efforts at rehabilitation.

How the Met says it will handle the controversy

Curator Andrew Bolton and Anna Wintour consulted Jewish community figures while developing the exhibition, according to the Associated Press. The Anti-Defamation League said it supports an approach that acknowledges the harm and examines Galliano’s efforts toward reconciliation.

The museum’s challenge will be to distinguish critical examination from uncritical celebration. The announcement has placed questions of accountability, redemption and institutional responsibility at the centre of the coming show.
