Hadestown Drops Geno Segers After Backlash Over Social Media Posts

The Broadway production of Hadestown has announced that actor Geno Segers will no longer join its incoming cast after fans criticised social media posts attributed to him as anti-transgender.

What changed

Segers, known for television work including Disney’s Pair of Kings and appearances in Yellowstone, had been scheduled to play Hades. The production said in a statement that he would no longer take the role following a mutual agreement.

The decision followed online criticism of videos and posts in which Segers reportedly discussed transgender women in sport and mocked the use of pronouns. Screenshots and clips circulated among theatre fans, leading to calls for the production to reconsider the casting.

Production response

Hadestown has not announced a replacement. Cast member Amber Iman posted a message indicating that concerns had been raised behind the scenes, although she did not provide details of private discussions.

The episode has renewed debate about performers’ public statements, workplace values and whether producers should change casting decisions after social media backlash. Segers has not issued a detailed public response addressing each criticised post.
